About Ritigala Strict Nature Reserve

Ritigala Strict Nature Reserve, situated in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, encompasses a mountainous area covered by dense tropical and montane forests. The reserve protects a unique ecosystem characterized by a mix of dry and wet zone flora due to its isolated location and the influence of the northeast monsoon. Ritigala is notable for its peak, Ritigala Mountain, which rises to approximately 766 meters (2,513 feet) in elevation. This reserve is one of the island’s most biologically diverse areas, home to many endemic plant species, rare orchids, and various fauna including endemic birds, mammals, and reptiles. Beyond its natural significance, Ritigala is steeped in cultural and historical importance. It features well-preserved ruins of an ancient Buddhist monastery believed to date back over 2,000 years. These archaeological remains include stone-paved pathways, reservoirs, meditation shelters, and intricately carved stone structures, highlighting the area's spiritual importance and the hermitic traditions of ancient monks who lived here. Visitors are attracted to the combination of natural beauty and historical intrigue, offering opportunities for hiking, bird watching, and cultural exploration. The reserve’s rugged terrain and protected status provide a pristine environment that feels remote and tranquil. However, access is controlled to preserve its sensitive habitats. Ritigala Strict Nature Reserve remains an essential site for conservation, Buddhist heritage, and ecotourism in Sri Lanka.
